Eleven-year-old Brody zipped up his blue hoodie and stepped out onto the front porch just as the morning sun peeked over the rooftops. His backpack bounced against his shoulders, packed with snacks, water, and most importantly, Poké Balls.
“Today’s the day,” Brody whispered with a grin.
All week long, kids around town had been talking about rare Pokémon appearing near the river, the park, and even the old water wheel near the Nith River. Brody had already caught a Pikachu near the library and a Pidgey in his backyard, but today he was hoping for something legendary.
As he walked down Peel Street, his Pokédex beeped loudly.
Brody sprinted toward Mrs. Carter’s flower garden. Sure enough, a small green Pokémon was hiding between the tulips. Brody carefully tossed a Poké Ball.
Shake… shake… click!
“Yes!” Brody cheered, pumping his fist into the air.
Just then, his older brother Archer rolled up beside him on his bike, wearing his backpack and a confident grin.
“Told you I’d catch up,” Archer said.
A moment later, their younger brother Miles came racing down the sidewalk as fast as his little legs could carry him.
“Wait for me!” Miles shouted. “I want to catch Pokémon too!”
Brody laughed. “Looks like we’ve got a full team now.”
Together, the three brothers explored every corner of town. They searched behind the grocery store where Meowth liked shiny things, and climbed the hill at Riverside Park to find a Charmander warming itself on sunlit rocks...
...and they even tiptoed through the splash pad where Psyduck waddled in circles!
Archer was great at spotting clues. “Look at those muddy footprints,” he said. “Something big came through here.”
Miles was the fastest. “There’s a Squirtle by the fountain!” he yelled before sprinting after it.
And Brody kept everyone working together. “Spread out,” he said. “But stay where we can see each other.”
By late afternoon, Brody’s backpack was dusty, Archer’s bike tires were muddy, and Miles’ shoes were completely soaked. Together, the brothers had caught six new Pokémon.
But then Brody’s Pokédex made a strange sound none of them had ever heard before.
The three brothers froze. “That can’t be good,” Archer said.
The screen flashed one word: Dragonite.
Without wasting a second, the boys raced toward the old water wheel. The wind whooshed around them as they climbed the grassy hill. At the very top stood a huge orange Dragonite, peacefully watching the sunset over town.
The glowing sky reflected in its gentle eyes. “It’s amazing,” Miles whispered.
Brody slowly stepped forward while Archer stood protectively beside his brothers. Dragonite looked down kindly and gave a deep rumbling smile. Brody reached into his backpack for a Poké Ball… but then stopped.
“You know what?” Brody said softly. “I think some Pokémon are better as friends than trophies.”
Archer nodded. “Some adventures are bigger than catching.”
Miles smiled up at Dragonite and waved. Dragonite spread its giant wings and lifted into the golden evening sky. The brothers watched until it disappeared into the clouds above their town.
